DONATIONS

The Contact team wish to thank Sir Nigel Foulkes for his most generous donation. This handsomely covered the cost of printing the December cover by John Holt in full colour.

The team also thank Dr Biggam for his generous donation.

ABig Thank You

The first 2008 Contact - time for me to say a big thank you to all the un-sung heroes who brave the elements in all weathers (flood, and tempest included) to deliver your copy of Contact hot off the press to your door.

The delivery of Contact relies on over 30 fellow villagers who continue to give freely of their time and energy. Without their continued effort it would be almost impossible to deliver the 1400 copies of contact printed each month to all the households in Adderbury and Milton.

Thank You

Mark Clayson, Contact Distribution

IS THERE NOTHING GOING ON??

Whilst preparing the Diary for this month's Contact I was surprised that there seemed to be little going on in Adderbury - can this be true I ask myself?

Probably not ; it may just seem that way. Organisers may have forgotten to send me information on their events.

Unfortunately I cannot read your mind. If you want something included please tell me!! Otherwise it will not be there for all to see.

Mark Clayson

While we are giving credits, I would like to record our thanks to Mark Clayson. He also gives his time each month to prepare the Diary and to deliver the printed Contacts to each distributor.

RB

POPPY DAY

The Royal British Legion sends its thanks and best wishes to the Residents of Adderbury and Milton areas for their generous contributions to the Annual Poppy Appeal. The total which includes the collection taken in St. Mary's Church reached just over £2500. This is a record amount for the villages. Well done! Next year we hope for £3000

Beer Festival at The Institute

The Adderbury Parish Institute Management Committee would like to thank all the Beer Festival Committee members for the substantial and very welcome donation of well over £2000 to the Institute's Restoration Fund, resulting from the successful festival held at the Institute in September. This donation will be spent in the next few weeks on further internal refurbishments to The Institute.

The festival was a popular and well attended event and will, it is hoped, become an annual event.

CHARLES SWAIN - FIFTY YEARS IN THE CHAIR!

On December 5 Charles Swain was host to members of the Adderbury and Milton branch of the Royal British Legion. He made his entry with due ceremony preceded by the Standard Bearer, Tony Chaney, and trumpeters from the Air Training Corps. The occasion was to commemorate his fifty years as Chairman of the Branch - a remarkable if not unique achievement. In speaking, the President made the point that in his endeavour to find out if this was an all time record he had approached National and County Headquarters, but both admitted that they had no records. One way to establish the facts, he suggested, would be to throw down the gauntlet in the RBL magazine and to challenge anyone who could show that they had done better. He ended by presenting a framed testimonial on behalf of all Branch members and with the words "We salute you Sir on a record of devotion to duty spanning half a century" which was wildly acclaimed by all present.

Replying, Charles thanked all for their goodwill and support over the years.

He explained that he had been drawn to the Legion by much kindness shown to his father when poorly after the First World War. He had joined after leaving the RAF in 1947 and was asked to be Chairman on a temporary basis in 1957! Reminiscences about earlier days followed and so ended a very happy and important evening in the annals of the Branch.

HONOUR FOR LOCAL RESIDENT

A singular honour has been accorded Elizabeth Suter in that all eight hundred of her original fashion drawings have been accepted by the British Museum for inclusion in the national archives. Until retirement Elizabeth was a leading practitioner of this form of art and a much revered lecturer at St Martins.

It may be of interest to relate that on her mother's side the family connection with Adderbury goes back some four hundred years and that her parents were married in St Mary's Church.

CIRCULAR WALK

As a result of the Adderbury Appraisal a committee was formed to create a leaflet highlighting a circular walk around Adderbury. After much work the leaflet has now come to fruition and has been distributed to households throughout the village. If you have not yet received one it should be on its way! The leaflet can also be down loaded from CDC's website which is www.cherwell-dc.gov.uk. Well done to all those involved in its creation.

Reports and Events

Bell Folk Club Christmas Concert The Bell Folk Club concert committee; John Ekers, John Richards, Elizabeth Holmes, Davey and Sheena McCormack would like to thank all those who made this year's Christmas concert such a runaway success. Two great nights of music and laughter in the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the recently revamped Institute. Thanks to the efforts of Dr David White and his colleagues on the Institute Management Board, the old place is gradually being renovated and restored to its rightful place at the heart of this wonderful village. We are pleased to report that we raised over £700 for local charities; namely The Institute Restoration Fund and Katharine House Hospice with the balance going towards the kitty to promote Party in the Park 2008.

We are so lucky in Adderbury to have such a wealth of talent available to stage a show like this. Where else would you find such a rich mixture of music; from folk to rock and blues with the occasional Morris dance and Irish gig thrown in along the way. A professional sound system was provided by Richard Watkins while the entertainment was freely given by members of the ever popular Bell Folk Club which is hosted every first and third Mondays of the month by John and Trish Bellinger at the Bell.

The younger set were well represented by Immie Leslie and Jess Hin playing and singing in beautiful harmony, Sarah Tindall and Jossie Evans - both now maturing into consummate performers, Tommy Ekers and Kathryn Tindall - barely in their teens, but holding the audience in rapt attention with their soulful singing and bluesy guitar playing. Two young chaps from Cullworth, Danny and Dean raised the temperature of all the ladies present and brought the house down with their final number featuring nine year old sister Leyna on sleigh bells.

Gill Allcock's Blue Coyotes and Wychwood gave us their own unique renditions of some popular favourites, while the visitors from Chippy; Pete, Pen and Gill gave us some wonderful three part harmony acappella, followed by Jane Gridley playing her own self-penned songs and leaving the audience cheering for more. Jed Mugford defied gravity with his fiddle playing and mid-tune switch to mandolin. Sandra Shallis, who we suspect has been paying midnight visits to the crossroads, gave a scintillating performance on melodeon and Butch made us all laugh - and cry - with his medley of songs embracing both types of music; country and western... The Tindall family - Banbury's first family of folk - gave an impeccable, blistering set, and the big chorus numbers were provided by the usual suspects from the Bell Folk line up; Jeremy, the two Johns, Davey, Sheena - and soon to be Adderbury resident, Sue Halls. We rounded off the evening - the cast and audience joining together - in what has become the Adderbury carol, Sweet Bells. Finally, we would like to thank all those who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the concerts possible; John and Trish, Rob and Sally for selling tickets, Hilary, Lloyd, Sally and Phil for hosting the bar and the lovely Di for manning the door and helping to make such a success of the raffle.

D. McC on behalf of the BFCC committee.

OVER SIXTIES CLUB

During November the Adderbury Over Sixties had a Bingo afternoon and an outing to the much improved and enlarged garden centre. We welcomed the several visitors that came with us to help swell the numbers. We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. The committee are now in the process of putting together a program of speakers and outings for 2008 New members welcome all meetings and outings will be entered each month in the contact diary.

THANK YOU FROM ADDERBURY PARISH COUNCIL:

Adderbury Parish Council would like to thank all those residents who pick up litter around the village, or who take the time to keep their own areas litter free. In particular we thank Mr and Mrs Jarvis of Deene Close and Mr Ken Lines, who are some of the residents who regularly help keep the village neat and tidy. I would especially like to thank Mr Jarvis for mending the seat in the Adderbury Court amenity area and tidying trees damaged by vandals in late October.

Diane Bratt. Chairman APC

PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

The highlight of the November meeting was undoubtedly the presentation by Yin Wong ARPS of the Amersham Camera Club, which also included a selection of his photographs. In reviewing these photographs, Yin took the Society along a personal journey from his early days of entering his photographs into competitions organised by his Camera Club, through the process of obtaining his professional qualifications, to the present day where his photographs now receive acclaim in the international arena. Yin's photographs were truly outstanding and brought a different perspective of photography to Society members. At the conclusion of his presentation, Yin fielded a number of questions from the audience and then also spent time with many members, offering a critique and advice on the photographs members had taken for the monthly photographic topic. Overall, a truly thought provoking and memorable evening.

The next meeting of the Society is at 7.30pm on 2 January in the Deddington Arms Hotel, when there will be a workshop on the use of software to help enhance digital photographs. The photographic topic will be "11.30 to 12.00 Christmas Day". Contact Philip Rigby on 812 481.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

www.adderbury.org

There has been an ominous silence in crime reporting by RINGMASTER over the past few weeks. This leads me to think that we have things under control and that VIGILANCE is winning. However, one is reluctant to be complacent writing this some three weeks ahead of publication. It should be recorded that one tradesman's van has been ransacked and valuable tools removed. There is no such thing as immunity!

The Chief Co-ordinator was delighted and flattered that some six enthusiasts had lined up for interview to succeed him …….. then he woke up! So come on you youthful sixty year olds, don't be shy (or thirty year olds for that matter). Meanwhile a Happy New Year to all and keep up the VIGILANCE!

ADDERBURY XMAS MARKET

With heavy gales and rain forecast for Sunday 2nd December, were we downhearted? We were somewhat forlorn when the heavens opened as the stall holders set up their stalls and had difficulty keeping their stock dry. So considering the runes, the weather was relatively kind to us with the odd shower and a rather blustery wind.

We were delighted to have a good turnout of people in the afternoon. Santa was a great success and lots of children bought reindeer food. We made a profit of a fantastic £350, which has been donated to the MacMillan nurses at Katharine House. The proceeds from the soup and refreshments came to £200, and has been raised for Jomps' Trust.

Our thanks go to the Morris Dancers, the Handbell Ringers, Tim the Town Crier, Santa, Sheena for her guitar playing for carol singing, and to all the friends and helpers of the Committee. Everyone helped to make the Market day an enjoyable community village event.

Any comments and feedback, positive or constructively negative would be welcomed on the website: www.adderbury.org

Performances take place on 17th, 18th and 19th January with a matinee on Saturday 19th.

Join us at The Institute for plenty of laughter, songs, sweets and even a licensed bar at the evening performances.

1ST ADDERBURY SCOUTS

Our first meeting in December was spent karting at an indoor circuit near Leamington . The fastest older Scout on the track as Louis Hunt who completed a lap in 20.78 seconds whilst Liam Saving was the fastest younger Scout, completing a lap in 22.19 seconds.

Dan Bolton karting

Meanwhile expensive activities like karting need paying for. Festive Friday, our annual Christmas meal for parents and Scouts raised £700 for Troop funds this year. The starter choices were home made broccoli and stilton soup, pate or king prawn and avocado citrus salad. For the main course it was chicken in a oyster mushroom sauce, or pan fried lamb steaks with a tomato and basil relish, salmon with bacon, lettuce and pea, or leak and mushroom strudel. A variety of puddings followed. The entertainment was an excellent Shirley Bassey routine with dancers - Dan Bolton, Louis Hunt, Alex Mobbs and Will Mobbs. Dave Phanichattra played Dame Shirley rather convincingly! 2007 will finish with the PLs Christmas Camp. After that its an exciting new programme for 2008!

Christmas Bazaar

This year's bazzar was well attended as usual. The total raised for PTA funds was £1,100. The main project for the PTA this year is the refurbishment of the school library area. New furniture has arrived and completion is expected very soon.

School Eco-News

We are aiming to become an Eco-school in the near future. We have an Action Plan of ways in which we can raise awareness of environmental issues for the whole school community and each class has recently elected two Power Rangers. Their duties include reminding everyone to turn off unwanted lights, taps and heating, and to re-cycle paper, plastics, cans and compost.

Our Power Rangers are

Class 1: Ryan Moller and Joshua Street Class 2: Nathan Wiesheu and Clement Gallais Class 3: Tilly Torgersen-French and Megan Stone Class 4: Chloe Thompson and Joe Hirst Class 5: Lewis Bullard and Luke Barton Class 6: Chloe Heath and Jordan Morris Our next big project is to design and build an Eco-garden to enhance our Science work and to increase biodiversity in the school grounds. Watch out for our next news update on progress!

PTA 200 Club

Support the PTA by joining the 200 Club. There are still some numbers available at £9.00 each for the remaining period. To join please contact Sarah Möller 01295 812920

Nativity Play

This year our play starred the Very Grumpy Sheep who by the end became a very happy one! This featured the Foundation Unit and Classes 1&2. Judging from the looks on the parents faces it was a great success. You can view photos of this and other school events in the "Gallery" section on the school website. http://www.christopher-rawlins-school.org.uk

Adderbury's school bus with no wheels!

Children in Twyford are now able to catch a bus to school that has no wheels, driver, seats or exhaust! Our school has now adopted the concept of a 'walking bus' in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council. Walking buses are a popular way of enabling children to walk to school in a supervised and organised way. Just like a normal bus, a walking bus operates along a set route and has a timetable. The Walking Bus follows the County Council's set-up guidelines. The children (and Drivers!) are provided with fluorescent jackets for the walk to school. Parent volunteers walk with them. The Adderbury walking bus runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays starting at 8.15 am from 40Twyford Road. Not only does the bus provide good exercise for our children it also helps to reduce the traffic congestion and accident risk as parents drop off their children. A similar bus from West Adderbury could be considered if there are parents willing to volunteer.

KATHARINE HOUSE HOSPICE

Collegium Regale Concert- St. Mary's Church, Adderbury, 13th January 2008, 7.30pm Katharine House Hospice is delighted to be presenting a concert in the New Year to be performed by Collegium Regale choral scholars of King's College, Cambridge. All members are currently students at the University of Cambridge, studying a variety of disciplines, but all sharing the same passion for choral music. Their repertoire spans eight centuries, with emphasis on sacred music from the fifteenth to the twentieth century; madrigals, folk songs, part songs and close harmony - for which the group is best known. Many remark on the diverse nature of the group's repertoire; surprised to find Byrd and the Beach Boys within the same concert programme! Tickets are £15 each (including mulled wine) and can be obtained by calling Sarah in the Fundraising Office on (01295) 812161. Please note that there will be no allocated seating on the evening and doors open at 7pm.

The Adderbury Half Marathon

While having a drink or two Jimmy Young, Gareth Stapleton and Tony Gill thought it would be a great idea to have a goal to aim for instead of just pounding pavements or footpaths while out running. Well, the outcome of that glass or two led to some limited "idea" testing over the next few days and the decision to hold what we think may be the 1st Adderbury Half Marathon on the morning of Party in the Park - the 12th July 2008.

The idea is that it should be a fun run and involve the many runners we see in and around the village. It is open to anyone and over time we hope it will tempt many runners of all abilities to visit our village and then join in the Party in the Park after the run. Our intent is to make it as inclusive as possible so we plan a Quarter Marathon for those who believe that the longer run may be a little too challenging. For more information visit www.adderbury.org where the latest information plus entry forms for runners may be downloaded.

With the festive period now over, it is time to start getting fit to run and then Party in the Park. So this call is to alert runners and walkers and some volunteers of our intent. Volunteers will be essential to aid us as course marshals, hand out water along the route and various other tasks in getting the run fully organised.

Parish Council Notices

The Parish Council met on 27th November. Those present were Mrs Diane Bratt(Chairman), Messrs Asbury, Atkinson, Burgess, Harper, Verdon, Mrs Joyce Cox and Mrs Rhoda Woodward. Apologies were received from Messrs Mitchell, Harris and Mrs Lyons. Ian Asbury was welcomed to his first Parish Council meeting. MATTERS ARISING: An e-mail had been received regarding the possibility of extending the 30 mph. limit along Aynho Road and monitoring the traffic on the Oxford Road. It was agreed to reply suggesting a 30 mph for the whole of the limit and asking when the consultation would be. Referendum: A Parish Meeting had been arranged for 4th December 2007 at the Institute at 8 p.m. The cost of a Parish Poll would be at least £2315. Cheshire Homes/Summers Close: It was reported that the houses in Summers Close are managed by a Housing Association and are entirely independent from Cheshire Homes. Annual Parish Meeting: Mary Harpley, Chief Executive of CDC has agreed to speak at the meeting on 23rd April 2008. Flood Alleviation: It was confirmed that the Parish Council had informed CDC of its consent to a culvert subject to the matters outlined at the last meeting. CDC had had estimates at a cost of £22,000. OPEN FORUM: Issues raised included a request for notice of the Aynho Road 30 mph consultation be put on the village website when it takes place; CHAAG/Bodicote Parish Council request that the traffic assessment for the intended housing development be queried following the refusal of planning permission for the Auction business on Cotefield farm on traffic movements; Independent Panel Review on the Horton Hospital, Press reports on changes in refuse collection. ACCOUNTS: It was agreed to renew and pay for membership of OPFA. The external audit and the annual return were approved and accepted. It was agreed that the Clerk would ask CDC about the need for retrospective planning permission and for the Conservation Officer to have a look. Banner Homes: An e-mail had been received from Highways on the issue of signs and verge markers. It was agreed to contact the CPRE and to write to the portfolio holder at CDC with a copy to the Chief Executive. PRECEPT AND BUDGET 2008/09 (FIRST DRAFT) A draft and note had been circulated but no decisions could be made until the outcome of the decision for a Parish Poll was known and it was agreed to consider this at the next meeting. The aim was to keep in line with inflation. PLAY AREAS: Mrs Cox agreed to have a look at the Lucy Plackett play area and to check the missing palings on the fence. Mr Harris to check The Rise. Consideration was given whether to proceed with installing a metal bow-topped fence at the Rise play area and it was agreed to leave in abeyance for now and to monitor the current wooden fencing. AMENITY AREAS: Sydenham Close: CDC is holding the money for the public open space, until agreement is reached about the Parish Council taking over, once the developers have carried out the necessary maintenance. The area is fairly wild and would be an extension of The Lakes which the Lakes Committee would look after. The Parish Council has asked to take this over. There had been some complaints about children's play in the area. Keytes Close had been previously looked at and the intention was to keep it much as it was and maybe re-vamp the bushes. The rough patch at Adderbury Court did not belong to the Parish Council and it was agreed to carry out a Land Registry search to confirm who the owner was. It was agreed to cut back the trees that obscure the view. BURIAL FEES: It was agreed to increase the fees in line with previous years' increases. HIGHWAYS; The six-monthly walked inspection was due to take place in December. They would be asked to look at kerbstones at The Rise, Rochester Way/Margaret Road, outside The Lodge and at St Mary's Road, re-tarmacing of Dog Close where affected by the floods; the road hump in Lake Walk, the road on the corner of The Green and the turning of St George's Lane which has broken up and the erosion of the grass verge in Round Close Road. PARISH PLAN: It was agreed to write to the groups listed in the Plan as to their future intentions and to note the Parish Council's intentions. RISK MANAGEMENT: A draft Food Plan outlining action to be taken in a flood emergency was agreed. Another problem is the low-lying road bridge by Pump House Garage. It was agreed that a meeting between Mr Atkinson, Mr Harper and Tony Brummell from CDC would be arranged. It seemed that Margaret Road was increasingly used as a rat-run and Highways would be asked to survey the traffic on this road. NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 15th January 2008.
