Friends Meeting House

History and background

One of the lesser known places of worship in Adderbury is the Friends Meeting House situated in the grounds of the village cemetery in Horn Hill Road. The first meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Adderbury dates back to 1656. The meeting house was built in 1675 by Bray Doyley, Lord of the Manor at West Adderbury, whose actions caused him to be imprisoned for two months. Today the meeting house is suffering from the rigours of time and no longer hosts regular meetings. It is, however, opened annually on the first Sunday in June when a talk takes place at 3pm.
