Adderbury Swamps
Lets all stop dancing around the subject and try to establish what has gone wrong with Adderbury Lakes. Maybe its time we had a reality check. I may be stepping on toes but I think the issue is off too great importance and urgency to spare personal feelings. In 2003 when ownership passed to the Parish Council they were a beautiful asset to the village, were once within the curtilage of an important listed building – itself containing protected structures and believed to have been designed by Capability Brown. It contained breeding ducks, geese, moorhens, and a multitude of visiting birds, many varieties of fish and a thriving selection of wild plants. Eight years later they are an unkempt piece of amenity land with two algae ridden swamps, a straggle of ducks and moorhens scratching an existence, visiting mink and poachers, and now an infestation of dangerous plants. Visitors struggle to make their way around especially in the wet and it is no longer considered worth the effort. I would also imagine that the local primary school have abandoned ‘nature trails’ along this area due to the danger from the footpaths, poisonous plants, nettles and unsafe platforms. (Are we waiting to be sued when someone upends into the mud?) I understand it has been declared a nature reserve – is this how one is managed? Left to run wild where only the predators will survive? The few crayfish that are left are a nationally protected species – but not in our Lakes. I am unable to find an official entry for the Lakes on the Local Nature Reserve listing so I take it this is an unofficial designation. Whoever designated this area has a responsibility to manage it professionally and there are many agencies in the UK who could offer advice and financial support. It is an arrogance to believe that just leaving an area to ‘go wild’ will produce a nature reserve. A wildlife survey needs to be undertaken and the dredging needs to be mindful of the protected species surviving in the lakes. Do we have an expert in the Management Committee who would steer this action? If not – are they fit for purpose? Maybe it was more of an asset when it was ‘just’ amenity land?
I expect these pertinent and pressing questions will just result in the usual fob off – a) a list of work done recently (was this done under the auspices of a nature expert and with a view to nurturing existing wildlife?), and b) the usual oblique riposte based on ‘if you don’t like it – come and do it yourself’. They may all mean well but do they have any idea about what they are doing? I for one don’t expect them to just give up their time to be gardeners; with the right approach there would be many volunteers to do this, but to actually manage all available resources. Maybe its time for them to poo or get off the potty before everything around there is destroyed.

MUGA Facility at Lucy Placket
In response to Nick Fennell's message posted on 12/07/2010 my husband agrees with Nick's comments about the poor workmanship - he doubts that the tower of pisa has got that much lean on it!
From the noise as I write (21:56) the kids have most certainly found this facility and are really enjoying using it.

Adderbury Three Spires Challenge
Just to reflect the comments below - I visited Adderbury for the first time last week to participate in the 10k race. It's a beautiful place and the run was extremely well organized. I live in Barbados and have participated in races all over the world and in that context the organizers should be very proud of this event. A special thanks to all of the local volunteers and marshalls for the friendly encouragement and clear directions. We'll be back!

MUGA FACILITY AT LUCY PLACKETT
In the Parish Council notes for 25th May it states this facility would be ready “ in a few days”
Six weeks later, after endless days on inactivity, I’m really not sure if it’s finished or not:
- when will there be a hoop at both ends of the court?
- is the pile of picket fencing going to be erected?
- or will players have to wade into the nettles on the embankment to retrieve their ball?
- is the ground around the playing area going to be turfed to prevent it being strewn with stones as it is now?
If all this work is still to be done, then why can’t the contractors be tied down to complete their task, and penalised for being so overdue?
If this is the finished article, then it’s a pretty shoddy piece of work, which after all the hassle on the subject, can only fuel the objectors’ fire
And you can hardly blame the kids if they do not treat it with respect - when it barely deserves any
We should have had a facility to be proud of, with kids queuing up to play – but I’ve seen no PR in Contact or Adderbury.org, and I wonder if our kids even know about it
Perhaps best if they don’t at this stage?

ADDERBURY THREE SPIRES CHALLENGE
Just a note to recognise the excellent job done by the organisers of the hugely successful Three Spires Challenge yesterday
50% more runners than last year, including 3 kids' races, and nothing but praise from the sweltering participants for the course, the marshalling and the overall faultless staging of the event
Health and safety regulations - and other less necessary bureaucracy -must put a huge strain on the organisers, but they seem to have coped as unflappably as ever
Lucy Plackett would have been proud of them!

VIEWS ON A BOULE/PETANQUE COURT
Dear Villagers
I am looking for feedback on whether the Villagers would like to have a petanque or boule area somewhere in the village.
I don't know a lot about it but have always enjoyed playing it when we go on holiday in France.
As I understand it the court is 18 ft. wide by 50 ft. long and consists of 3 inches of crushed gravel and then 3 inches of decomposed granite.
I would be grateful for any feedback - pros and cons and possible sites for such a feature if one is wanted.
Thank you for your time.

Day of Dance
Rather belatedly and in response to Ed's comment on Day of Dance it would appear that the security measures set up for this year's event were very successful and are to be commended. The playing field was cleared of revellers by mid evening and the inevitable litter cleared up early on sunday morning. Well done everyone! If paying for security is what it takes to restore our lovely Day of Dance to the village event we know and love then so be it.

Adderbury Court Signs
I read with some surprise in the Banbury Guardian Adderbury Court was to have some "No Cycling" signs .
To my best of knowledge we do not have a cycling problem in the Court.
Perhaps someone could explain why it is deemed necessary to have these signs.

Day of Dance 2010
What no comments?? Does this mean that the attempts of the committee of villagers and parish councillors to combat bad behaviour in the village were a success?? Would love to know of any comments good or bad about this year before we meet on May 12 to discuss how it went and to build upon next year and keep the day a village celebration.

Proud of being English?
On Friday 23rd April I was listening to a radio phone in on the subject of St George’s day and, in particular, on being proud of being English. As a consequence I retrieved my (large) St George’s flag, which I have had for 20 years and hung it out over Tanners Lane from my garden. As it happens I do this every year to join in the Day Of Dance celebrations so this was not something I was doing for the first time.
It proudly hung some 10 feet above the lane over Friday and Saturday when the two Morris troops danced outside the Old White Hart, which is next to our house.
When I came down on Sunday morning the flag had gone! Some person or persons had removed it over night (with some difficulty I imagine) and taken it for themselves. Perhaps they were demonstrating just what it meant to them to be English…..

Community Speedwatch Volunteers
For some while Oxfordshire County Council together with our Parish Council have been working hard with our local Police Team to target the villages number one priority - speeding.
The Banbury Rural Neighbourhood Team have highlighted a number of areas around the village where the problem is at its highest, and you may have seen them conducting operations around Milton Rd and Aynho Road in particular.
In order though to continue to protect our village from this growing problem they need volunteers who are passionate about tackling speeding to become a volunteer.
Essentially, Community SpeedWatch (CSW) is a scheme that allows volunteers from the community to take a real lead in dealing with speeding issues. It produces immediate results, and is a highly successful enjoyable and educational experience. Volunteers from the local community assist their Neighbourhood Team usually for an hour at a time with operations performed in areas known by villagers to have a speeding problem.
In order to perform these checks, a Speed Indication Device (SID), is used which displays the speed of oncoming traffic. This has the effect of not only providing the volunteers with a speed to record (if necessary), it also serves as an educational tool to remind drivers of their responsibility to adhere to the speed limits. Anybody travelling through the village over 35mph will have their details recorded on a database with consequent actions being taken by the Police.
In other villages, including Deddngton and Bloxham where volunteers have joined together, the effect on reducing speeding has been instantly noticeable and helps protect the rural village environment we all cherish.
In order to take part in a CSW scheme, a pool of volunteers from the village needs to be available to run operations. This would include at least 2 people at all times whilst the operation is running. The more willing volunteers our village has, the more operations can be run in the area, as it eases the pressure on the Neighbourhood Team if only one Officer needs to be present.
So, why not become a volunteer and help fight the increasing menace of speeding, you can do this in a number of ways;
Contact the local neighbourhood police team on 0845 8 505 505 or email banburyruralneighbourhood@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk or since I am helping to co-ordinate a group of volunteers if you prefer you can contact me on 01295 810086 or email r.meadows@virgin.net.
Come on, your village needs you!

Triffids
Wild Arum, or Lords and Ladies is widespread and naturalised. Spread by birds eating the orange fruits, likes damp shady places. Eradication is not easy, but must involve removal of seed heads before the birds get at them, and very deep digging to remove all tubers. The berries are poisonous. It is, however quite an attractive plant, particularly the variegated species (Arum italicum)

YEAR OF THE TRIFFIDS?
Suddenly my garden is totally overrun with the arrow-shaped leaves of what I understand to be cuckoo-pint or wild arum
And today I've noticed them throughout the village down to the Lakes
Why are they suddenly here when no sign of them last year?
How do I get rid of them?

Lucy Plackett Field Is To Be Ruined... And No Body Cares??
I have tried and trid to get peoples attention regarding the plans to make a tarmac football pitch on Lucy Plackett Field. Not only will this be an eyesore, and ruin the beautiful views, it will encourage teenagers and drive out the very young and elderly in the village. It is a ridiculous idea, I am suprised there is not more commotion regarding it considering how similar things in Banbury have happened and ruined playing fields there.

NEW HOUSING FOR ADDERBURY?
NEW HOUSING IN ADDERBURY?
THE BATTLE HAS COMMENCED.
Berkeley Homes has submitted an outline planning application to Cherwell District Council to develop land to the West of St. Mary’s Road, Adderbury. The extent of the proposed development includes circa 65 houses, a football pitch with changing rooms, parking, open space and its own access onto the Milton Road*.
This proposed development is separate and distinct from the Local Development Framework and is caused by a shortfall in deliverable housing stock for the next 5 years up to 2014. Cherwell District Council has to make up this shortfall as soon as possible and has admitted that it has to find 300 or more new homes equally divided between the four villages of Adderbury, Bodicote, Bloxham and Deddington. If the Berkeley Homes proposed housing development is approved, it will represent nearly all and part of Adderbury’s share of this shortfall. Who says Adderbury should take a quarter share of up to 350 houses? Why are the other five Class ‘A’ villages not expected to bear their share?
How long will it be before the Timms/Benfield housing and football pitch development to the North of Milton Road surfaces again? And what about the Banner homes proposal North of the Aynho Road behind Walton Avenue. It has been refused once by the District Council but has still been re-presented by Banner Homes to a recent Adderbury Parish Council meeting.
What’s your view?
Let’s hear it now and please let our District Councillor [Cllr. Rick Atkinson 01295 812972] and the Planning Department know your views.

Not only should we be aware of the plans for development in West Adderbury. Just along the road to Banbury from the Kings Sutton turn, Twyford, no more than approximately 1000 yards from the Twyford boundary, there are plans to relocate Banbury United Football Club ground adjacent to College Park House, the house immediately opposite the turn into Weeping Cross. Next to that site is another site referred to as “Strategic Allocation”; this will accommodate a further four hundred houses. As sure as night follows day this will soon become a reality!
Whatever your opinion of their proposals, if you do not tell them they will assume you agree.
So why not ring the Planning Department at Cherwell District Council on 01295 221883 or visit Cherwell District Council Offices reception and get a copy of their booklet and representation form/questionnaire titled “Draft Core Strategy.”
Alternatively go to www.cherwell.gov.uk/localdevelopmentframework then click on the centre panel that comes up headed Development Plan Document, click on that and you then get five choices:-
Draft core Strategy – the full works 188 pages
Executive Summary – 32 pages
Sustainability – 194 pages
Leaflet – 9 pages (this is what they will give you at CDC)
Representation form/Questionnaire – 4 pages with 15 questions apart from your personal details!
Why not get one, fill it in and send it back…..?

Adderbury parking
Good on you Jacob, but alas you are whistling in the wind. I'm alright Jack and sod the rest is the order of the day. Parking all around the shop, the pub and the church can at times be chaotic, while Sunday worshippers continually churn up the verge in Mill Lane. And, it will only get worse, especially as some people consider it a form of traffic calming.

I have had enough of people parking on the main road through adderybury. Its like a giant car park at the moment with people parking where they want. The main dangerous area is opposite The Bell pub running down the hill. Only a few years ago people never parked there and now it seems everyone thinks its their right to. Please dont park there, its dangerous!

Footpath 13
Subject: Works to trees and hedgerow adjacent to footpath 13, Berry Hill Road, Adderbury

From: Caroline.Morrey@Cherwell-DC.gov.uk

CC: MarkHarrison@Cherwell-DC.gov.uk
Dear Ms Hazel,
Further to our conversation yesterday, I am writing to confirm why the council is unable to take any further action regarding the above matter.
The reason that the removal of the hedge is not an offence is:
A) The continuous section of hedging removed does not exceed the limits contained in the Hedgerow Regulations 1997;
B) None of the trees were protected by a Tree Preservation Order; and
C) None of the land is within a Conservation Area.
Land/tree/hedge ownership is not a material planning consideration. Therefore as AGU Treecraft under instruction from Mr Aylward undertook this work without your consent this is a matter that you will need to resolve between yourselves.
A copy of the Hedgerow Regulations 1997 can be found at the following web address.

Public Footpath Berry Hill Road
Public footpath 13 is just off the A4260 as you enter Berry Hill Road on the right hand side. It runs from the top of Berry Hill Road down to the water works.
Please view Google Maps to see a picture that was only take last summer of this area
This path has recently been extensively cleared by two different parties, none of which has been approved by Oxford County Council (OCC), Cherwell District Council (CDC) or the two landowners either side of the footpath.
I think it is important that we retain this footpath as a quaint old fashioned dreamy footpath full of wild life, in its original state with an extensive native hedgerow again. This would potentially mean that this area would need to be replanted.
The worst case scenario, which I believe is the underlying intent of the clearance activity, is to gain regular vehicle access down the footpath to the land recently sold opposite the water works, which was sold under the caveat of no vehicular access to the site.
A site visit has been undertaken by CDC and OCC.
If you have any views please do post them to this site.

ref: MORE HOUSES FOR ADDERBURY!
Further to Peter's message ref the Housing Plans.
I took a walk around the village on Thursday and was surprised to see the public footpath from the old sewage works to Berry Hill Road had been cleared. This is next to and North of the area known as AD5. There was evidence that vehicles had been using the cleared path down as far as the sewage works.
Access to the sewage works is through Tanners Lane and the Leys so I can only assume someone is planning access to the fields from the main road.
As this is a public footpath the use of cars, and even bikes for that matter, is prohibited.
The hedgerows have been completely obliterated and a haven for wildlife has been destroyed. Does anyone know who did this, why they did it, and if they had permission.

MORE HOUSES FOR ADDERBURY!
Cherwell District Council has recently posted a document on its website which residents of Adderbury should be aware of. It can be accessed via:
http://modgov.cherwell.gov.uk/Published/C00000115/M00001225/$$Supp2136dDocPackPublic.pdf
On Page 107 you will see the type of development for Adderbury is described as Minor, Infilling and Conversions.
On page 109 section b137 you will find an interpretation of” Minor” that I and others find as unhelpful as it is unintelligible.
On page 108 you will find a table describing the distribution of Housing in Rural Areas. A total of 350 houses are destined for Adderbury, Bodicote, Bloxham and Deddington (see the 3rd February edition of the Cake). It follows that Adderbury is certain to have at least 87.5 houses at the very least – it being unlikely that there would be any reduction in the ‘quota’ for Adderbury at the expense of any of the other three. It is perhaps far more likely that Adderbury would suffer additional numbers to ease the already well stocked Bloxham and Bodicote. The chosen sites are destined to be decided upon on 22nd February
On Page 110 you will find reference to Rural Exception Sites. These can use Greenfield land to fulfill the need for local affordable housing. I understand that Adderbury Parish Council has identified three sites in Adderbury but I am not aware of which sites AD1 – 18 it has in mind or even if there are other sites involved that have not been disclosed. This information may be in the minutes for 1st December 2009 or 14th January 2010 however, at the time of writing, these have not yet been published on the Adderbury Website (3/2/10)
If you require copies of the relevant site maps detailing AD’s 1-18 please e-mail me at burrowspeter@hotmail.com or leave a telephone message on (01295)810478 requesting a copy of “Adderbury Map” and “Extra Sites for Adderbury 4319-779 and I will try to get them to you either by e-mail or by hand. Don’t forget to let me have your address if required by hand!
A.C.A.G., I should stress, is not at this stage, taking a view adverse or otherwise of these recent revelations. It is felt however that residents should be made aware of the movements on the planning front that will inevitably affect all of us.
Contact a Parish Councilor for more information!

Adderbury Lakes
In reply to Nick Fennell’s concern about the silting up of the lakes. We are currently working on this problem with a company in Hampshire. We have had the top lake surveyed to estimate the amount of silt that needs to be shifted. We have submitted a plan to the company and they are working out how it will be done, seeking contractors with the necessary machinery and obtaining quotes. We have also asked for a quote for finding and plugging the leak in the south lake. I estimate the whole operation will cost between £20,000 and £30,000. Once we have the quotes we will apply to various sources for grants – but it will not be easy to raise that amount of money – any offers to help raise funds will be gratefully received.

Adderbury Lakes
While I agree with Rick Atkinson's comments about the good work done in maintaining the beauty of the Adderbury Lakes area, I wonder if the current level of silting up of the Lakes will result in us having no Lakes to enjoy in the not too distant future?
What plans are there to dredge the Lakes again, how much would it cost, and where would the funding come from?

ICY ROADS
Now that the ice has mostly cleared, I would encourage everyone to voice their own concerns about the lack of salting/gritting on our minor roads last month
The subject of grit bins has been on the Parish Council agenda for the last couple of meetings with no result, but this is now an issue that should be addressed with urgency.
Amongst many others, Tanners Lane, The Leys, Round Close Road and Manor Road have been a complete sheet of ice until recently, and a number of people have had very nasty falls which would have been averted had the roads been treated in some way. There used to be a grit bin at the bottom of Tanners Lane, and several others in the village – why were they removed?
I would be more than happy to have one of reasonable size outside my house, as I’m sure other residents would
Apparently there is a good supply of grit bins in Deddington and Kings Sutton, and I'm at a loss to know why Adderbury can't provide the same service.
Please write now to request that this subject is raised at the Parish Council meeting next week

Adderbury Lakes
As a member of the lakes committee I feel I must respond to Conne Reekie's complaints about the state of the lakes footpaths (December Issue of "Contact"). The lakes are indeed a nature reserve and flora and fauna should be left to develop as naturally as possible. The area is not a carefully manicured suburban park and although it may have looked neglected it was just natural growth alongside the paths which Conne is complaining about. We used to cut this back but decided this year to let nature take its course – and you could still see the paths. My family and others in the village like the feeling of "wildness" when exploring the lakes area and yes, we do get a few scratches and nettle stings, which is generally accepted as part of country life.
It seems that Conne failed to notice all the other work that we have undertaken in the last two years:
Tree felling to remove 2 large poplars; Two new foot bridges; New railings on south foot bridge; New Long Wall entrance Gate: CCTV Cameras to deter vandalism; New Vehicle entrance gate in the Deer Fence; New nesting boxes (not easy to see); Wood chippings from the tree felling laid on the paths. All this has cost several thousands of pounds which we have to find from grants and voluntary donations - perhaps Conne would like to make a contribution?
Our thanks go to all the villagers who helped with this work and turned out for the seasonal clean up sessions during the past year. Thanks also to the stalwarts who have remained on the committee – and by the way, we are always looking for new members who have an interest in the lakes.

Fireworks
On Saturday 7th November many people celebrated Guy Fawkes night with fireworks, and up until then I had no problem with this. However, on Sunday morning I was very angry when I found a rocket stick on my carport. Why? Because only three months ago I spent the thick end of a grand putting a new polycarbonate roof on my carport and renewing some woodwork and that rocket stick, falling from a great height, has damaged one of my 8 feet x 5 feet sheets so that it will have to be replaced. The edging strip is also broken and I am, to say the least, peed off a lot.
I admit that when a rocket is fired up in the air no-one can tell where it will land, but I am now coming round to the opinion that only organized displays should be permitted and certainly fireworks should be banned near housing if damage will be caused which can never be traced and the costs bourne either by my insurance or me and the inconvenience of repair be totally mine.
If anyone would like to claim the stick as their own and agree to pay for the repairs I will be more than willing to return the stick through a hole in their trousers.

LOBSTERS @ THE LAKES
In response to Hayley's article in "Contact" on the "Lobsters At The Lakes":
The creature shown in the photograph is a Signal Crayfish which is a native of North America and has been encroaching into British inland waters rather like the gray squirrel has ousted our native red squirrel from our woodlands. It is gradually displacing the British crayfish which used to be prevalent in our water features, including Adderbury Lakes. The Signal crayfish is an escapee from the commercial import markets and carries a virus which kills the British variety.
The Signal has bright red under-claws but the "give away" in Hayley's photo is the white spot at the top of the each claw joint. The British crayfish is similar but has creamy white/peach under claws and no white spots. I have never seen the British species at the lakes but records show that it used to be resident. It is a great pity that the British variety seems to have been ousted from Adderbury lakes but on the other hand, I am pleased that Hayley has seen a Signal because I have not seen one for months. They are considered a delicacy by some and I have evidence that we have had poachers at the lakes using night traps which I believe have reduced numbers considerably. It is illegal to trap the British crayfish as they are a protected species and it is illegal to transport the Signal crayfish which means ("catch 22") that if you are caught leaving the lakes with one you can be prosecuted - so, poachers beware!
I'm delighted that Hayley has taken the trouble to write her article and congratulate her on her powers of observation. The crayfish are not easy to see - perhaps she would like to join the Adderbury Lakes Committee as our "natural history" member; she would be very welcome.

THE BELLS
Bell Ringing
As Tower Captain of the Adderbury church bellringers I feel the need to respond to Robert Blackburn's criticism.
We ringers are aware that a few people do not appreciate the sound of church bells yet nevertheless chose to live within earshot of a church with bells which have been rung for over 400 years.
The ringing last Saturday was a Full Peal and lasted about 3 hours. We voluntarily restrict the ringing of such Peals and usually give notice in Contact. Peals are rung in celebration of a special event, in this case a 40th wedding anniversary.
Occasionally we ring Quarter Peals which last for around 45 minutes but these normally preceed a church service, which historically was one of the main reason for the existence of church bells. Otherwise ringing preceeds the main Sunday service and takes place for weddings and occasional funerals; plus a weekly practice session on Thursday evenings.
Although ringers obviously enjoy what they do it is undertaken as a service to the church and the village and the commitment is not regarded as a "sport" as was suggested.
This long standing tradition is appreciated by most and is one of the elements that makes Adderbury a quintessentially English village.

The Bells! The Bells!
Thank you Trevor.
The bells are fabulous feature of this village. We're lucky to live in a place with such a beautiful and ancient church which contains such exceptional bells rung by a team of such gifted volunteer bellringers.

The Bells!
Never heard a thing here in Twyford Avenue! Perhaps you should enquire why they were ringing. there was probably a good reason.

bell ringing
Having lived in the village for over twenty years now I thoroughly enjoy listening to the church bells, and living in Dog Close, I think you would agree that we probably hear them louder than most people.
To me they signify everything that is good about living in a village, one that is not just a "dormitory".
Long may the bells ring.
Ann Lyons - Posted: 17/08/2009
Too much bell ringing
Last Saturday the church bells rang all morning without a break, finishing at 12-35. What a marathon of endurance that was for everyone within earshot (that's most of the village). Is bell ringing a kind of "sport" now? Do those who ring the bells for sport know that some of us don't like the noise?

Oxfordshire Village of the Year - District Winner
The Parish Council recently entered Adderbury into the Oxfordshire Village of the Year competition 2009 sponsored by the Oxfordshire Rural Community Council and Calor. We were selected as one of the 12 finalists and whilst the overall county winner was Goring on Thames (congratulations to them) I am delighted to be able to announce that Adderbury has been named as the Cherwell District winner of the competition! Speeding Traffic
We've just had another accident outside our home on the Oxford Road, thankfully with no one injured. On leaving the village and driving towards Deddington drivers accelerate to the national speed limit and are oblivious to sometimes heavy traffic leaving both Station Yard Industrial Estate and the Fired Earth site. Could we not extend the 30 mile zone up to the junction with Berry Hill Road? This would also improve the lot of pedestrians walking the narrow path and also cyclists struggling up the hill.

Speeding Traffic
I wonder if anyone else has a view on the speed of traffic using the B4100 between the traffic lights and East End Lane? The speed lmit has recently been reduced from 40 mph to 30 yet the ommission of any regulatory signs or other deterrents mean that traffic is moving ever faster and providing more safety issues in a developing residential and school area.
OCC seem to think job done even though they are amazed at the speed recordings they have taken and that enforcement is a matter for the police, our parish council seem ambivolent or impotent, and the Police themselves have promised greater activity but no permanent fix. OCC say their criteria for installing VAS is met but no action. Road Safety Partership have been asked to get involved but no action and no sign of any either. There is no joined up approach from the agencies involved just "pass the parcel!" If I was cynical I'd say this issue is filed in the "too difficult to do box" but if you have a view I have contact details of all the agencies that are involved to see if we can get something done.

Mrs Bratt also asked for more volunteers (I think the term she used was "fresh blood") so if Jan, and others, are able to volunteer some time to help look after the Lakes I'm sure they would be made very welcome.

Football Pitch
It has been brought to my attention that there are plans of having a concrete football pitch built in the Lucy Plackett playing fields. I think this will ruin the image of the beautiful park, and why ruin what we already have on the field. I'm sure that they could save a lot of time and money by adding goal posts and some sheltered seating at the edge of the field, this will also keep in tune with the natural beauty of the village and please the youths that are interested in playing football in the park. I support that the village is trying to do something great for the youth's but this does not mean disrupting the great scenery in the park. Adderbury is a beautiful village, I feel strongly about keeping it that way.

I am sorry I did not include my name before, I felt it unsafe due to the fact I am a girl under the age of 18. Is there anything else you feel that I must publicise before my points are worthy? My phone number? A photograph?
So, here are the facts. They are putting a tarmaced area by the size of 20 metres by 12 metres on Lucy Plackett Field. There will be goal posts and basket ball hoops.
As I know someone on the council, I know that they have pretty much decided it will go ahead.
Having lived in Banbury I know what happens when they put a football pitch on a field, the eldery, the young and familes feel they are inadvertantly alienated/ threatened. Also they are ruining a natural area of beauty and trying to fix something that isn't broken.
If they are trying to provide for the youths of Adderbury, why wont they listen TO A YOUTH?
They want shelterd seating, not a lump of concrete. Its a waste of time, money, and a lovely community playing field, not to mention the affect it will have on the enviroment in that area and the disruption in the area when it is most used by youths.
Eleanor Rose Gilbert - Posted: 06/05/2009
To: I Am
In the 15 years I have lived in Adderbury (opposite the playing field) , there has always been a football pitch on the Lucy Plackett field. The original goal posts (huge heavy metal beasts) used to be put in place in the late summer and taken down in May, at the end of the football season. It is only in the last 2 or 3 years that the football club has replaced these "fixed" posts with ones that they erect for each game, and then remove them afterwards. I expect that these new posts are required because of health and safety - or for some other mundane reason, but I think that it is a shame that the old posts were removed because I would often see groups of young people playing football using them.
There used to be a small goal post that ran parallel to Dog Close, but that was broken and not replaced some 5 years ago. Again this was a resource that the youngsters would make tremendous use of – throughout the year.
Quite often I see youths playing basketball, bouncing the ball of the football pavilion or the other building, when there are no cars parked there.
Since the posts have been lost as a resource, the number of youths playing football on the field has decreased, but they do still appear now and then, using sticks stuck in the ground or jumpers as makeshift goal posts.
This does provide some evidence that the youths of the village might like to have goal posts etc on the playing field that they could use. I certainly would not begrudge a small part of that playing field being taken over to provide a facility that would be used.
I suggest you ask the “someone on the council” that you know, for history that surrounds the buildings on the playing field and the various plans that have been put forward. A couple of years ago there was talk of building a new football pavilion and community centre on the Milton Road, and at that time, there was much disinformation, exaggeration, rumour and unsavoury lies spread though the village. When you wrote "the parish council plan to concrete/tarmac over Lucy Plackett field" it set off alarm bells that someone might be trying to stir up the same old trouble again. Anonymous postings which had wild exaggerations in them were a hallmark of the previous whispering campaigns that I thing Damien McBride would have been proud of!
Hope this helps fill in some of the background
John Glover - Posted: 06/05/2009
To Anon:
Your posting appears to be rather lacking in ANY facts (like your name for one!)
Your statement "the parish council plan to concrete/ tarmac over Lucy Plackett field" could range from the removal of all grass, replacing it with all weather Astroturf - or that the access road might be widened a little to increase the parking available (thereby reducing the impact for those living in Round Close Road when there is an event being held at Lucy Plackett).
Please expand of what you believe the plans are – so people can comment of the details - rather than try to drum up hysteria yet again over the future of Lucy Plackett.

I'm sure this page was set up for people of the village to comment or speak up about any topic that they wish, and although it's a great tool I wish the people that use it to speak up about the various topics would be bold enough to use their name rather than ANON. If you're not prepared to use your name don't bother posting!!

re: The Death of Lucy Plackett??
Anon's post is wholly inaccurate. Anyone who attended the Parish Council's annual meeting will know this is not true.
The Council outlined an idea to create a small area for the play equipment (formerly at the Rise), on the embankment side of the field. This is a very good use of a tiny part of a community facility.
Anon is simply scaremongering. Perhaps that's why they remain "anon".

The Death of Lucy Plackett??
I was just wondering how many of you knew that the parish council plan to concrete/ tarmac over Lucy Plackett field and turn it into a football pitch. I have emailed them and told them it is a ridiculous idea and that they should just put in extra biins/ football goal posts/ shelterd seating areas.
Why is everyone just letting this happen? It will ruin the natural beauty of the vllage and put the village under social issues.

To the pair of inconsiderate and educationally challenged horse riders
This morning just after 7, I saw two horse riders both on brown horses, with a brown pointer dog in trail, riding up Dog Close. Once over the bridge, they started to ride their horses on the Lucy Plackett playing field. I informed them that they are not supposed to ride their horses on or across the playing field – so they continued up to the footpath and used that to cross the field instead!
It is surely common sense that on a park where children play and a footpath on which mothers use taking their children to attend the playgroup or use the swings etc. that having horses foul there is not a good idea. So keep horses off the playing field and off the footpath (it seems you really have to spell it out to some people).
I would also assume that while riding a horse it is quite hard to keep an eye on your dog, so if it did foul on the field you would be unlikely to notice or even bother to get down and clean up - which gives responsible dog owners that do pick up a bad name.
The horse riders that I personally know are considerate and thoughtful. It is a shame that this pair is letting the side down.
