2008 Beer Festival?
Having enjoyed last years beer festival (although not the hangover), and after having a great day out at the Day of Dance, is there another Adderbury Beer Festival planned for this year, and if so, when?

District Council Elections
I would like to thank the residents in Adderbury and Milton who took the time to turn out and vote for me in the recent district council elections. My thanks must also go to all those people who gave me support during the election campaign.
After 5 years on the Parish Council I am now moving up to District (promotion at last!), where I feel I can work more effectively for both villages. I look forward to the next 4 year term and will endeavour to serve ALL the residents of the ward to the best of my ability.
Best wishes to all,
Rick Atkinson
Adderbury and Milton Ward.

Bored Teenagers
Hey!!! Come on you lot...after asking for ideas about what type of events to organise in the village(specifically for younger generations, although not exclusively) I'm sorry to say that we've had just 1 (ONE...UNO...UN) suggestion so far, which came from Ella (well done Ella on your success by the way)
If you whippersnappers want or need something to do, email or call me and our PiP committee will arrange it for you, all in aid of YOUR entertainment and village causes. Ella's suggestion of a Village Talent Show has gone down well and will be arranged for later in the year (Adderbury's Got Talent panelist applications to me please), but apart from that we've got nothing to go on, which has surprised me to be honest.
So come on yoof...let us know what you want and we'll try to arrange it. I look forward to reading any future posts about 'nothing to do in the village' with interest!

The Lakes
Contrary to Miss X's comments, no contributor to the dialogue arising from vandalism at the Lakes has pointed the finger at 'local Adderbury teenagers'. Rick Atkinson merely asked for witnesses who had seen 'teenagers' causing damage at the Lakes to contact the Police. As Miss X confirms that a 'large group of teeens' were seen hanging around that day and seems to be pretty certain that they were from another village, I assume she can help the Police to identify them. I hope, given her knowledge, that she has contacted the Police (contact details in Rick's e-mail) to assist with the identification and, hopefully, prosecution of those mindless individuals intent on damaging a village amenity enjoyed and supported by the people of Adderbury.

lakes vandalism
Before people are so quick to point their finger at local Adderbury teenagers for the awful damage caused down the lakes, are they really sure that it was local teens that did this. I am saying this because I know that there was a large group of teens from another village hanging around the village all day on that Sunday.Just makes me cross that some people judge local teens too quickly.

Teenagers - WE NEED YOU!
This is a call to ALL teenagers in the village for some help. We need to form a committee to help organise events under the Party in the Park banner throughout the year specifically for Under 18's in the village. This is YOUR chance to help decide what fun events are laid on for the next 12 months in Adderbury for YOUR age-group, YOUR benefit and the benefit of the Hospice and other worthwhile causes. As such we NEED YOUR input. If you want to get involved (PLEASE!!!), or have any ideas as to what events you'd like to see over the next 12 months in Adderbury, email me at Triv@AdderburyEvents.co.uk
Without your ideas, input and help, nothing will happen (or you'll get events that you're not interested in!). Email me, or post your ideas up on this message board and we'll be in touch.
THIS IS YOUR CHANCE - GET STUCK IN!!!
We also need some help down at the park on the day of the big festival. All we need is 2 hours of your time on the big day to help things run as smoothly as possible. If you can help out with this email Help@AdderburyEvents.co.uk and we'll be in touch. It's important that we have helpers from all age-groups on the day, not just the 'elders' of the village so we can all pull together and again make it the special event it always is.
Let me know your thoughts. Even better, let me know your contact details so I can put you on the committee and the Helpers list!!!

Bored teenagers - do something about it!
I grew up in Adderbury and have just come across the site and have enjoyed reading all your moans! Trouble is, that's all there are - no solutions! Adderbury has always been a village that pulls together and gets things done... how about a few ideas and solutions that you personally would be willing to help set up and get involved in, which you'd also enjoy using. There are plenty of oldies out there willing to help - stop giving them excuses to whinge about you and give them some ideas instead! x

MINDLESS VANDALISM AT THE LAKES
The police are looking for witnesses who saw tenagers ripping the railings off the bridge over the waterfall, smashing the drain pipe on the summer house, smashing tiles on the boathouse roof and throwing logs down the waterfall. Were you down at the lakes between 12.30 and 2.30 pm last Sunday 30 March 08? A group of local teenagers were seen entering the lakes at that time; did you see what they were up to? Parents of teenagers, where were your kids last Sunday afternoon? This is not just kids having a bit of fun, its criminal damage and is costing the Parish Council thousands of pounds to rectify. If you know anything, call Thames Valley Police on 0845 8 505 505 quoting Crime number JA3059452/08.

Facilities for teenagers
The Parish Council are considering putting equipment for teenagers in the Lucy Placket Playing Field.
This would include the football/basketball court which was removed from the Rise, and we are thinking of other possible equipment to add to it.
But before we make any firm decision we would like any young people with an opinion to let the Parish Council know what they think.I have some ideas from young people I've spoken to around the village, but if you have a view you should let us know.
Deddington Council have provided some equipment at the Windmill Playing field -- is this the sort of thing Adderbury teenagers would like?

BORED TEENAGERS
I have read with interest all the comments with regards to the "bored teenagers". I, too, feel that these young people do indeed need something to do and somewhere to go. Would it be an idea for perhaps a youth centre to be set up, perhaps on a weekly basis. Maybe the youngsters themselves could set it up with the help of their parents! What about the Institute or the Lucy Placket Centre as a venue? Let's stop moaning about the fact that there is nothing to do in Adderbury and let's start doing something positive about it! Please feel free to talk to me - maybe I can give you some ideas! Looking forward to seeing some positive comments on this message board in the future!

in answer to |dave's query.....day of dance will take place on Saturday April 26th as it has every year since 1975 ....
i dont know why details should have been removed from this website ....anyone know the answer ?
We're a small team and can't possibly keep up with everything that goes on in the village so it's up to those who run events in the village to make sure their event is listed - if yours isn't please go to the events page and add it!

Bored teenagers
I would like to respond to the bored teenagers. Having recently grown up in this village myself, I feel that I had a very enjoyable childhood. There was no youth centre but I feel that there are lots of things to do, if you use a little bit of imagination. There is a sports field to play games on, lots of beautiful countryside for long hikes or walks, Adderbury theatre workshop, the tennis courts and if some people would give the Scouts a chance you would find that they do lots of fun and interesting activities. Personally I do not see why there is so much criticism of a village which provides an outlet for someone with some imagination.

If you are contemplating giving the above event a go now is about the time to start some training. It would be great to get as many people from the village involved as possible and so if you are interested but apprehensive please either e-mail me at jy@why50.com , come along to The Bell at 7pm on wed 16th april to meet the organisers or visit the half marathon page on this web-site. We can give you training tips and all the encouragement you may need and believe that almost anyone can get round with the right preparation. You dont need to be a good runner, its very much a fun run and you will feel an amazing sense of achievement after-no matter how long it takes you!
The same applies for the shorter distance events that will be happening on the day.
Remember that finding out a bit more doesnt mean you have to do it.....

Help Adderbury Teenagers
As a parent of an Adderbury teenager I am concerned about the lack of facilities for the youths in this area. The Adderbury Teens are a nice bunch of kids but are in great need of a place to hang out. Perhaps somewhere to shelter when weather is bad as I feel very sorry for them when I see them sitting on the ground sometimes on very cold nights chatting. Its such a shame that some teens are getting into trouble simply because there is nothing to do.They are so bored! Not all teens are into scouts and they really miss their ball court. Perhaps if it had a higher fence around it like the one on Bankside the balls wouldn't hit cars .
Mr Popplewell - Posted: 25/02/2008
Help keep us out of trouble
Youths in Adderbury like myself are really bored and have nothing to do so we just hang around the village and get in to trouble which we don't want. We would like a football court which we had but was took away, and some where warm for the winter. Not all of us like scouts. We just want somewhere to hang out that is not a bus shelter or bench in the cold.

Dog Fouling
I have a field with a footpath over it at the end of Manor Road, Adderbury, dog fouling is a big problem here, people obviously think that as its grass they do not need to pick up. (Children also regularly walk this footpath). Some do pick up and kindly leave their bags of dog poop next to my box where I sell eggs, for others to clear up. This is very irresponsible, unhygienic, and selfish and gives all good dog owners a bad name.

Horn Hill Road
Further to Steve Betts comments regarding the condition of the road surface ,may I suggest another route to remedy the problem.
We have two active councilors who represent the village, one County Councilor and one District, it may be fruitful to contact either as local elections are just around the corner and it is quite surprising how quickly these jobs get completed when votes are at stake.

As many of you have not given us your email details, if you would like to be involved in this discussion please email dot@adderbury.org with your name, age and email and we will pass on Mr Atkinsons details for you to get in touch directly.

Horn Hill Road
Those that live along the stretch of Horn Hill Road that has recently been resurfaced and those that use it on a regular basis, will be aware that the repairs carried out in the summer were pretty poor.
The road has been swept to clear loose chippings on numerous occasions and indeed, this is an ongoing process. However, all that this seems to be achieving is to expose more and more of the tarmac which, on the first hot day of the summer, will presumably melt.
I know some of my neighbours are pretty fed up with this and I have written to the highways authority complaining of the substandard job that has been done and of how the surface is breaking up. I have also pointed out the problems caused by stone chippings to pedestrians and parked cars.
I thought I you might like to publish their reply:
“I have inspected the Horn Hill (Road) Adderbury. We are aware of the failure of the surface dressing and our contractor has been informed of it’s state with a view to maintaining it in a safe condition. The contractor is responsible for any remedial works to the dressing for a period of two years at his cost. The road was swept yesterday and it’s state will be reviewed on a weekly basis” – Simon Marsden 7th February.
That’s a really neat piece of buck passing! :-)
Drive safely.

Bored teenagers
I think it has been made very clear by numerous teenagers the situation with "entertainment" in the village is WAY below parr.
I like the fact that Rick has responded to these comments however I am slightly concerned as to what the solutions may be?!
The kids need MATERIAL solutions as in a DECENT Football facility which from what the kids are describing alike Cherwell heights court WITH sides! and lighting. However I know lighting may be a problem pending a location, and also other items like Skate ramps, jumps etc etc.
I can guarantee for a fact if some "lets make woollen jumpers and all play happy happy games together" idea is brought in it will be useless! even though the intent is good.
Kids need time to do What THEY want, when THEY want, they find their own way in the world, they just need to be provided the base materials to make their own entertainment.
However I must also point out again Adderbury scouts www.Adderburyscouts.com is renowned as the best everywhere, kids who have left years ago including myself still talk about our days now, and all quote "Scouts, probably some of the best days of my life"

boredom
i am very annoyed with the fact that everybody in aderrbury knows that teenagers have nothing to do but they sit there and do nothing about is this is absolutley ridiculous we teenagers have ourselves made comments and people of an older age have made comments about it so why is nothing being down. me and my friends said the football court in the rise would have been better if it was caged but someone who was involved with the constuction of the court said "oh we thought it would have made you feel unsure as it seems alot like a prison" but we replied "it would have been better as footballs would have never left the court" so i put this to you a simple soloution like a cage would have solved all the problems for adults and teenagers alike

Dog Fouling in Twyford
Dog bags can be obatined from Taste Buds free of charge so whoever has allowed the deposits to be left in Twyford Avenue can hardly use cost as an excuse. I have even staked the offending offerings with a bag attached to each stake for the use by the perpetrator!
So the only "excuse" is that you are lazy or squeamish or both and if so you should not be in charge of a dog!
Why don't you come and clear up your mess or do you expect someone else to do it for you?
Peter Burrows - Posted: 09/01/2008
Dog Fouling
I would like to support the words of Ken Coleman with regard to dog fouling in the streets of Adderbury. On a walk this afternoon that consisted of the Twyford part of Adderbury we too noticed large amounts of dog mess in Twyford Avenue, Twyford Grove and infact pretty much every 100 yards along Margaret Road and Rochester Way. It's bad enough that these dog owners leave the mess on the grass but to see it on the pavement also is absolutely disgusting. I think the owners should be named and shamed anyway.

Dog Fouling in Twyford
The irresponsible dog owner(s) who allows their animal(s) to foul the grass verges and pavements of Twyford Avenue and Twyford Grove should be aware that their identities will be revealed and that there is a fine of up to £1,000 payable.
There are notices asking people to clear these deposits and not only is this an indication of these owners attitude to their fellow villagers it is also a health risk to children who use these areas.
Are these people who allow this to happen really that ignorant and selfish in their attitude ?
These persons are giving responsible owners an extremely poor and unfounded reputation.
Please stop and clear the mess !!!

Adderbury all one village - a bit of history
The Twyford that is now a part of Adderbury was never a place! Twiford is a topographical description in AngloSaxon, the language spoken in this country over a thousand years ago. 'Twi' is the Saxon word for two our modern word twins derives from it. The word 'ford' also Saxon describes a place where one can cross water easily on foot or by horse. So, the modern name Twyford originally described a point somewhere on a river where it could be crossed by two closely related places.
At the top (north) of the 1735 map (on display 3/4th November, 2007 at the Institute) of East Adderbury three tracks can be seen traveling roughly west/east one of which starts near Weeping Cross running ESE and then SE to Twyford Mill which was sited on the River Cherwell; just in Northamptonshire, The second track also started from the Banbury road and ran roughly along the line of the present Twyford Road and on to the mill. The third one also starting at the Banbury Road (just south of the Crescent at what is now Kemp's Road) lead to Kemp's Farm (hence its name and the farm is still with us); that track then continued on from the farm to mill at Twyford. As there was obviously no bridge over the Cherwell at that point and at that time, farmers taking their sacks of grain from farms in the northern part of the parish would have needed to cross the river somewhere to get to the mill so the 'twi fords' obviously did that duty.
These three tracks can be clearly seen on the 1948 OS Map 1125,000 or 21/2 Inches to 1 Mile sheet SP43. Twyford Mill, today, is still a grain silo where many local farmers still take their grain for storage. Once, the Enclosure Act of 1766 was enacted in 1768 the road system in Adderbury was changed and a proper road was constructed between Adderbury and King's Sutton with a stone bridge crossing the Cherwell the two fords would therefore have become redundant; however their original existence is perpetuated by the name Twyford.
The first house to be built in what is now Twyford was Greenhill House (the Cheshire Home) in 1906. Between 1911 and 1922 a handful more were built on land opposite Greenhill House known as Twyford Gardens hence the development became known as Twyford Gardens. Post the Second World War the modern estate we now know as Twyford was developed piecemeal. Incidentally the AA Gazetteer lists at least five Twyfords all of which are villages or towns in their own right all of them would have had similar origins.

Re: Newcomers
Well, Mr John Webb, what can I say?
Thank you for the warmest of welcomes to both the forum and the village!
Which part of my forum post prompted the attempted character assassination?
Was it my desire to spark intelligent debate on a local issue, or the fact that I aired my own opinion, which I assume I’m not allowed, having only just moved to the village?
Is this the typical welcome offered to all new residents or visitors to the Bell?
Fortunately, I am able to answer my own question here, as my wife and I have attended some of the recent village social events (the beer festival and garden party), and we have received a very warm welcome form all of the people we have met (even at the Bell!).
We feel lucky to have moved into a beautiful village, with some very friendly neighbours, as well as being near to other family members and friends in the village.
As Edd Frost eludes, we have chosen to move here, not only because we hope to send our son to the local school, but also because we are aware of the many fine attributes afforded by the village such as the local pubs, church and the sense of community.
I am aware of all of the above having worked at the Banbury Business Park for over 16 years, and having spent many a fine time in the local pubs, and enjoying the day of dance many years ago. We even commandeered the Red Lion back in 2004, on our wedding night, as many of our family and friends stayed there with us.
All of the above, however, should not matter one bit!
My post on the forum was intended to gain the views of people the village, having read many posts on the forum relating to development and rural expansion. I felt this might be a good way involving myself in local discussion.
Unfortunately, the first I learnt about the proposal for the Cheshire Homes site, was the letter from CDC. I’d be more than happy to start a discussion on the poor service received from my solicitor, but that’s a whole different story!

Well that was a lovely Adderbury welcome!!
With regard to the response made by John Webb to the building issues relating to that of the Cheshire Home site raised in the last post by Andrew Charman: I thought this was a valid question and possibly raised to prompt some discussion on the subject and also to get some more details on the happenings. I also happen to know this "newcomer", he, his wife and young son have moved in along the road from myself and my wife. Since moving to the village, in August, they have actively involved themselves in many village events, introduced themselves to their neighbours, joined some of the societies, and generally have tried to get stuck into village life. It was by talking to them that we discovered that they, as we, have spent many years looking to move to the village as they very much like the place and know how special it is and have family connections already living here. We both have young families and hope one day that they will be attending the village school. I totally understand that there have been some newcomers in the past when on taking up residence have taken it upon themselves to complain about the church bells and the cows mooing. PLEASE do not assume that ALL new residents to the village are like this.
We have known about the Cheshire Home site plans for some time but are not aware of the full extent and just know that work will be starting soon.
As a regular at the Bell, I have never witnessed any member of the public come in and ask questions about village life and future building plans within the village before they purchase a property. Quite frankly if they did I wonder what kind of reception they would get if it was the gentleman responding to the question here. I wonder if Mr Webb should think a little more carefully when replying in future to other subjects as if I was faced with an answer like this I would be inclined to take the view of why bother involving myself in future village activities. Let's hope you were having a bad day and that Andrew and his wife do not think that this is the view held by the rest of the village.
Edd Frost - Posted: 11/11/2007

Your recent correspondent who has just moved into Twyford seems to have been surprised by the proposals for housing at the Cheshire Homes site. It would appear from his comments that he should either have come here and chatted to people who would have advised him as to the scale of development that was proposed, or got himself a different solicitor who should have told him about possible development at this site so that he could have investigated further. I hope he is not another of those people who move somewhere and then want things changed to suit them like stopping the cows mooing or the church bells ringing! The lesson if you are buying a house anywhere is to walk around and talk to people, it's amazing what you can find out, and there is always that centre of activity where intelligent conversation is one aspect of the welcome afforded visitors, it's called The Bell.

Adderbury all one village
When I moved here in 1967, there were three entities within the village of Adderbury – Adderbury East, Adderbury West and what was and is known as Twyford. Soon afterwards the two parish councils of Adderbury East and Adderbury West amalgamated to become one parish – the parish of the village of Adderbury.
I was the District Councillor and one of the Parish Councillors for Adderbury for some twenty years and during that time many people asked why there was a Twyford. Many newcomers to this part of the village, said that they felt that they were treated as “different” and people right the way through the village from St. Mary’s Road to Lester Close, posed this question on a regular basis.
A couple of weeks ago, I met a relative newcomer to the village who asked me why on earth I had moved from St. Mary’s Road to “that awful side of the main road”. I told him that during all the years I had lived in the village I had heard nothing but good reports from every single part of our village, and my neighbours were just as nice at both places I had lived.
I believe it is time that the Twyford part was dropped, after all there never has been a separate village we are one and the same. Twyford as a name came about as the mill/wharf on the Kings Sutton road (by the bridge) was called this and when what is now known as Morgan’s Orchard was built, the Midland Red ran bus trips from Banbury to Twyford Tea Gardens and when Twyford Gardens was built they were called this for that reason.
It was interesting at the Historical Society Exhibition this weekend, to see the original advert in the Banbury Guardian for the houses in Twyford Gardens being built in the village of Adderbury. There were also a number of maps going back over the last three centuries and none of them referred to Twyford (except for the wharf and mill) they all show East Adderbury and West Adderbury.
When I receive my Council Tax demand from Cherwell District Council it requires me to pay my rates for the village of Adderbury. When I vote in the District Elections I vote for a councillor for the village of Adderbury. When I vote in the Parish Elections, I vote for councillors for the Parish Council of Adderbury. When I’m buried it will be in the Parish of Adderbury.
We have one Parish Church, one School, and one Library all for one village – the village of Adderbury. Such august bodies as ACAG and ATW stand for Adderbury Conservation Action Group and Adderbury Theatre Workshop – there is also of course, the 1st Adderbury Village Scout Group etc.
There are six Twyfords in the country but only one Adderbury – so why on earth do we need the word Twyford in our address. There is nothing to stop those that want to and I know some people from other parts of the village are still using Adderbury West or East in their addresses, if anyone really wants to then they can put Twyford, Adderbury in if they are desperate to keep it in their address, but lets become one united village. After all we all add to village life no matter which part of the village we live in. In fact it must be confusing for some people’s addresses i.e. Twyford Gardens, Twyford, Twyford Avenue, Twyford etc. Surely it would be simpler and easier for people to find if the addresses were Twyford Gardens, Adderbury or Twyford Avenue, Adderbury etc.
At the recent Crime Watch Meeting, a member of the public asked whether the crime figures for Adderbury included Twyford and was told no they didn’t as we weren’t counted as part of the village. Why not? Some people have also told me that they have been given to understand that it can also have a derogatory effect on insurance costs and housing prices. I’m not particularly interested in that, to me it is ensuring a sense of identity. I expect there will always some ill-informed people who talk about “that side of the main road”.
I spoke to the Post Office about this issue and they told me that should anyone want to change their address, all that they needed to do was to ring 08456 – 011110 or 08456 – 113219 (1-0321584058) (yes I was surprised at this too) or to write to Address Complaints SR3 3SW apparently that is all the address you need.
Officially there has never been a Twyford in Oxfordshire it has just crept in over the years. So lets correct the anomaly once and for all and all of us be Adderburians.

Footy court
Because:
*The Lucy plackett is crap
*The posts are taken down
*The grass is very moist due to the brook
*The parish council have £20,000 pounds worth of football court that needs relocating

footy court?
There's a brilliant 'footy court' in the middle of Adderbury called the Lucy Plackett playing field - much bigger and safer than the main road - and it's empty most of the time.
Why not get on your bikes and try it out some time?

footy court
i think we should have a footy court at the cresent you could take down the middle trees and put it there as there is quite a gap between the road and the houses so there is space for it most boys in adderbury are keen footballers but we need something to do or we will be bored

bored teens
I'm a teen and I get really bored in Twyford I think you should bring back the court as we have nothing to do maybe we could move the court to the Cresent where there is free grass and space between the road and the houses. We are all keen footballers.
please write back on this issue
