ADDERBURY GOLF DAY 2010
ADDERBURY GOLF DAY 2010
STRESS BRINGS ON THE BIRDIES………AND SMASHES RECORDS
Adderbury entrepreneur Gareth Stapleton and his American driver Casey Strine III rushed up the M40 from a top-level stress meeting an hour late for their tee-time - and then cruised to a 53 point score to win the sixth staging of the Adderbury Golf Day at a sun-drenched Banbury Golf Club on July 1st.
Gareth hit a gross 72 – a record for this event, but they were pushed all the way by runners-up father and daughter team Louise Young and Steve O’Brien, with Louise playing in only her third competition and coming in 12 under handicap
Third place on a countback went to Phil Montanaro and Neil Chapman
They all left in their wake a field of 54 golfers of all shapes sizes abilities and ailments, who enjoyed the outstanding condition of the course, and Banbury Golf Club’s usual warm and welcoming hospitality
Geoff Barrett hit the longest drive, and BGC stalwart Tony Chainey again took nearest the pin - but this time with a hole in one! Expensive day for Mr Chainey!
Thanks to the sponsors of the tournament (Field Sales Solutions of Thame, Benfield Homes and Mr Georges Kaye) and to the many local businesses and villagers who donated such a splendid array of draw prizes, we were able to raise a record £2100 for Katharine House Hospice
Will you be there next year?

MILTON CRICKET CLUB 20TH ANNIVERSARY MATCH

MILTON CRICKET CLUB 20TH ANNIVERSARY MATCH – JULY 4 AT BANBURY CC
MILTON HOLD OUT FOR DRAW AGAINST INTERNATIONAL ALLSTARS X1
With no cricket in Bloxham or Adderbury for many a year, the tiny hamlet of Milton (population 150) has just celebrated its 20th year of keeping alive the traditions of village cricket in the area, with a pulsating drawn game against a very strong International X1 on at Banbury CC on Sunday
The Allstars father & son opening pair put on 120 for the first wicket, with veteran Paul Tew (78) rolling back the years to illustriously outscore his vaunted son Ian (40)
Hooky’s bright young hope Adam Webb added a scintillating 65, backed by a typically dour 26 from the infamously quirky skipper Simon Rae, allowing a sporting declaration on 235 for 4
Only the promising Greg Fletcher (2-33) and evergreen Guy Wilby (2-32) were able to keep the runs in check, but Milton’s veteran paceman Colin Houseman still showed flashes of years gone by to trouble the fluent stars
In reply Milton quickly lost their prolific openers Wilby and Andrew Stanley to the pace and swing of Hooky’s Dan White (4-36), but, still flirting with the prospect of victory, entertained the sizeable crowd with some crisp hitting from founder members Paul Hopkins (40) Ian Adams (31) and the talented Dan Smith (30)
However the guile of County star Jimmy Phillips and veteran poet Kit Wright tied Milton down, and despite the mouthwatering temptation of Martin Phillips’ lobs, they shut up shop for an honourable draw
In a short ceremony after the match, awards were made to Milton stalwart Colin Houseman for his unstinting club effort and almost 500 overs, Ian Adams for his illustrious innings over 20 years, and Andrew Stanley, Chris Higgs and Guy Wilby as all-time top batsman, bowler and all-rounder respectively

Walks Around Adderbury
The latest publication from Adderbury History Association, aims to answer some of the questions about the village's history which new residents and visitors frequently ask when they first come to Adderbury. It gives a wealth of little known facts for those who live in the village and also aims to whet the appetite to seek out more information about the area and village.
The book, which is spiral bound and ‘pocket size’ for ease of use when walking, features 3 guided walks, each of about 45 minutes duration (depending on how long the walker dwells in individual highlights. All the routes are contained within the village boundaries and on ‘made up’ footpaths.
It is well illustrated and contains over 50 photographs and line drawings, old and new, and 4 maps specially drawn for this book.
Priced at £6.50 it represents excellent value and is available from Taste Buds in the High Street

The Adderbury Three Spires challenge – Saturday 10th July 2010
Is this your year ?
The village running club is pleased to confirm that the 3rd Adderbury Three Spires Challenge will take place on the morning of Saturday 10th July 2010. Following on from the rave reviews received for last years run we are expecting bigger numbers this year. The Club would love as many villagers to take part as possible and there is still plenty of time to train. It is a fun event and runners of all ability are very welcome. As usual there is a choice of distance – 10k or half marathon, plus there will be kids races around the Lucy placket field before the start of the adult races. Last year we had whole families taking part – why not get yours involved?
The running club will help anyone with training tips and if you join us on one of our weekly runs we will provide all the support you need to get round. This year we are particularly keen to get people running who have not run for years or who think they might be too old/unfit/slow to take part– we are a very friendly bunch and far from elite runners - no-one will feel out of place and its free!!!
Finally, please remember that all proceeds go to village causes, we have secured some major sponsorship this year which covers all costs. So enter -you and the village will feel better for it!
Further details go to www.adderburyrunningclub.co.uk or email me to find out how we can help you start running jy@why50.com

TWENTY FOUR HOUR QUIZ!
On Saturday 27th March, Landlord John Bellinger, of the Bell Inn Adderbury, will rise to a challenge set by his customers, to run a quiz lasting 24 hours and raise much needed cash for Katharine House Hospice!
He has now set the questions, all 2,400 of them, but a quiz isn’t a quiz without teams to answer the questions, so John is challenging customers to enter a team for all or part of the quiz and get sponsored, either for the number of hours their team takes part, the number of answers they get right or for just taking part!
Teams will be made up of four players, with two substitute allowed and no player can take part for less than a three hours period.
Each round will last for one hour and will be made up of 50
minutes of questions followed by 10 minutes of answers, scoring and comfort breaks, etc.
Teams/individuals must raise sponsor money, and a fee of £20.00 per team should accompany their completed registration form, which is available from the Bell.
Teams may play more than one period of time during the 24 hour quiz, but priority will be given to teams who play for more than twelve hours.
Prizes will be awarded to the team who finishes with the highest number of points, to the individual who raises the most money for Katharine House Hospice and the team who scores the lowest average number of points will also be presented with an appropriate prize!
As some teams may not start at the beginning of the twenty four hour period and because the object is to ask questions not repeat instructions, a quiz will be held on Thursday 25th March at 8.30pm with two intentions.
John explains, “Firstly, it will be part of the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz, with thousands of people around the UK taking part. It’s a great opportunity to help SMASH the record for the World's Biggest Pub Quiz, whilst raising loads of cash to help the UK charity Family Holiday Association give severely disadvantaged children a much-needed family break. Donations of £10.00 per team of up to six are requested.”
“Secondly, it will be an opportunity for teams taking part in the 24 hour quiz to find out how it will be run and for them to ask any questions they may have regarding the format. There will not be time during the 24 hour quiz for explanations and some teams may be at a disadvantage if they do not attend Thursday ‘World’s Biggest Pub Quiz’, not only for this reason but also because a number of questions will feature in both quizzes!”
In addition to teams, John is recruiting volunteers, to assist him at the end of each round, to give the answers and record the scores on the leader board. Sponsors are also being sought to provide prizes and incentives to those taking part, to ensure the challenge achieves its main aim, to raise the much needed funds for Katharine House Hospice! Anyone wanting to support John’s challenge by sponsoring his efforts may do so by visiting his webpage www.justgiving.com/challengejb24hourquiz.

Bell rings for Adderbury licensees John & Trisha Bellinger - two of the best pub licensees in the country
The Bell, on the High Street in Adderbury, has been recognised as one of the best pubs in the country.
The pub’s licensees John and Trisha Bellinger have been nominated for two major awards by trade magazine The Publican.
John and Trisha are finalists for the Tenanted Pub of the Year and John is a finalist in the Publican of the Year category in the Publican Awards 2010.
The Publican editor Caroline Nodder said: "The Publican Awards reward and celebrate the great people, ideas and initiatives which makes a pub business stand out from the crowd.”
“There are some truly great pubs and pub companies which are leading the way not only for our sector but for British retail as a whole and far from being down heartened by the financial climate these operators have risen to the challenge and are giving their customers their best ever pub experience.”
Bell Licensee John Bellinger said: “It's a wonderful accolade to have been named as finalists in not one, but two, categories of these prestigious national awards. Trisha and I work very hard to provide our customers with the very best possible food, drink and accommodation when they visit the Bell and our small but loyal team of staff deliver a quality service that is continually gaining us the kind of recognition that puts us at the forefront of pubs in the area.”
Hook Norton managing director James Clarke said: “This is fantastic news. John and Trisha are to be congratulated for their hard work, commitment and professionalism. They richly deserve being named as finalists in these prestigious awards.
The Winners will be announced at The Publican Awards 2010 on Wednesday 21 April - www.thepublicanawards.com

AWARDS FOR STAFF @ THE BELL
Staff from the Bell Inn at Adderbury have all scored top marks in the nationally recognised Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (ARAR), following a course at Oxford Brookes University in October.
The award demonstrates the commitment of the staff to responsible alcohol retailing, enabling them to act within the law and to support licensee John Bellinger in selling alcohol responsibly at the Bell .
The award was developed by the BIIAB, the awarding body of the British Institute of Innkeeping, in response to industry-wide training requirements to demonstrate commitment to responsible alcohol retailing. It provides additional protection to licensed premises operators and staff alike as it contains 3 mandatory questions that ensure every candidate fully understands the legislation concerning underage sales, serving persons who are drunk and the licensing objectives.
Topics covered in the course included the nature of alcohol and the effect that it has on the human body, licensing law in relation to the protection of children from harm, social responsibilities relating to the retail sale of alcohol, how to recognise drunkenness, and the duty staff have not to serve drunken customers.
John, a Fellow of the British Institute of Innkeeping, also took the course and was delighted with the outcome. “The results show that running a pub is not about selling as much alcohol to as many people as possible. The majority of pubs offer alcohol for sale in a responsible manner to responsible customers, who choose to drink in a sociable and safe environment. Too often pubs are blamed for the trouble caused by certain groups of people who buy cheap alcohol from less responsible retailers and then drink to excess, either at home before going out or in the local park.”
“The awards are a fantastic accolade to the staff working here at the Bell . Those who have successfully completed this first unit can go on to study a second, the Award in Customer and Drinks Service, which will lead to the Professional Barperson's Qualification, the highest award for bar staff in the country!”
Rob Yeatman, who joined the team at the Bell Inn as a cleaner when he was sixteen, is really proud of the award. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to gain further qualifications connected to my work at the Bell . There’s a lot more to the job than customers think and it’s great that these qualifications are available to support that fact!”

Parish Council acts on flood risk

I'm sure that many villagers will have noticed that the mill stream had become almost completely choked with weed and stones just down stream of the churchyard bridge. Following the usual negative response from the Environment Agency (who are responsible for keeping our rivers and streams clear) we decided that the increased threat of flooding was too great and that we would have to take matters into our own hands.
Accordingly, a volunteer working party was organised through the Parish Council for Sat 7 Nov 09. Luckily, the weather was perfect and the water levels remained low so that we were able to get into the stream (armed with wellies, rakes and wheel barrows) and clear the obstructions. I estimate that we removed about 2.5 tons of stones and half a ton of weed. The increase in the flow of the water was quite dramatic and there's no doubt that this work has significantly reduced the risk of the mill stream overtopping its banks.
Many thanks to Parish Councillors Joyce Cox (and grandsons Alex and Eddie!), for coordinating the event, and Martin Rye, for finding a suitable trailer. Many thanks also to Jen Turner, for tea and sandwiches and to Ian who turned up with a JCB!
Meanwhile, at the District Council, we continue striving to "beat the bureaucracy" and get our planned flood alleviation works under way.

The new service will allow residents to put any food waste (cooked and uncooked) into their brown bin.
The campaign is called ‘Time to Switch!’ because the aim is to urge as many residents as possible to put any food waste they have into the brown bin. That way we’ll collect the maximum amount for composting.
The scheme has already started in Adderbury Residents have received their kitchen caddies, complimentary roll of compostable liners and information packs.
The kitchen caddies are designed for indoor use and has been provided for residents to use in their kitchen and then transfer the food waste to the brown bin.

Adderbury Cine Club Update
After its successful launch screening in July, Adderbury Cine Club would like to invite you to its second show on Friday 6th November at The Institute.
Starring Hollywood legend Burt Reynolds, A BUNCH OF AMATEURS (15) tells the story of an ageing action hero desperate to revive his flagging career on the British stage and features a distinguished cast, including Imelda Staunton, Sir Derek Jacobi and Samantha Bond. Jefferson Steel (Burt Reynolds) is an ageing Hollywood action hero. He’s vain, insecure and out of work. Under pressure from his client, Jefferson’s incompetent LA agent stumbles upon the perfect role: a prestige run playing King Lear at Stratford-upon-Avon . Jefferson believes he has landed the role of a lifetime but arrives in the UK to discover that instead of a leading role in a Royal Shakespeare Company production, he is booked to tread the boards with an amateur dramatic society in the sleepy English village of Stratford St John, Suffolk. A clash of cultures with comic complications ensues in this funny and ultimately moving comedy.
The feedback received after the screening of The Reader in July has been fantastic. A Committee has now been established to move Adderbury Cine Club forward and we will update guests about our plans on 6th November. Please also check our website at www.adderburycineclub.org.uk
Our plans include raising £5,000 before Christmas to buy our own set of projection equipment and planning a programme of 10 films starting in January 2010. If you are able to donate and help us start a new resource for Adderbury, please contact Keith Norton at fundraising@adderburycineclub.org.uk or 01295 812170.
Tickets for the 6th November screening cost £5 can be booked by contacting Helena Scott at boxoffice@adderburycineclub.org.uk or 01295 810708. Doors open at 8pm for 8.30pm. Thank you for your support.

MILTON CRICKETERS STAND TALL IN BALTIC EXCHANGE
In recent years the cricketing hamlet of Milton (population 156) has overcome the might of the full national sides of Menorca, Malta, Italy, Jersey, and Slovenia, and this year they took a pioneering trip north to the beautiful city of Tallin, capital of the Baltic state of Estonia
Our intrepid travellers returned with another scalp to add to their proud collection with a thrilling last over victory
But their tour did not start well – in the warm-up match against Tallinn CC the Milton side, jet-lagged by the Stansted early-morning experience, struggled in the field against some brilliant batting by Tallinn’s big-hitting Australian and Zimbabwean stars, who mustered 302 in 40 overs on a lightning-fast outfield. Only Milton stalwart Gavindi Bedward saved us total embarrassment by mopping up the rabbit tail with 5-24
In reply Milton got off to a flyer with Guy Wilby (42) and Ian Adams (40) putting on 90 for the first wicket, before Bangladeshi international quickie Ranabanana tore into them and stopped the run flow. Only an heroic 89 from Sam Whataman and a chunky 25* from Chris Higgs could make any impression as Milton finished on 260-8
Now suitably refreshed by Tallinn’s generous hospitality and leggy support team, Milton then faced the full Estonian national side, with their very pacy Estonian opening bowlers, who are the spearhead of Estonia’s rapid progress in the ICC Trophy
On a pitch and outfield transformed by overnight rain, Milton dug in to reach a meagre 166 all out, with young Whataman again top-scoring with 39, despite oncoming swine flu
The elegance of the Golden Age of cricket was recalled with Ricky Burnell’s delightful 27, and veteran Kiwi vet Mike Whataman thrilled the crowd with another of his cameo innings
In reply Estonia were always struggling against the pinpoint accuracy of Micky Pearson (3-25) and Chris Kinch (2-19) and some brilliant Milton fielding – the bucket hands of Jerry Fennell and Sam Whataman took superb catches, and it was left to ageless keeper Nick Fennell to snap up the last wicket with only 5 runs needed in the last over – a thrilling and well-deserved victory
Estonian cricket is a joy, with an eclectic bunch of exuberant ex-Pats fully embracing the locals into their teams, taking Kwik-cricket to the schools, and planning a ladies league to complement the thriving men’s set-up – coupled with superb hospitality, and the indescribable pleasure of stuffing their Australian leader

Adderbury named as Distrcit Winner in Calor/ORCC Oxfordshire Village of the Year Competition 2009
The Parish Council recently entered Adderbury into the Oxfordshire Village of the Year competition 2009 run by the Oxfordshire Rural Community Council (ORCC) and sponsored by Calor. Whilst the overall county winner was Goring on Thames, Adderbury has been named as the Cherwell District winner of the competition. The competition is aimed at promoting rural community life and the judges looked at the what the village had to offer its residents and visitors in a number of categories including: Community; Business; Sustainability; and Communications. Our success in winning the District prize reflects the judges appreciation of the range and diversity of facilities offered within Adderbury and the dedication and hard work of so many villagers in keeping these going and contributing to the thiving community that we are. Well done Adderbury!

The Bell Inn at Adderbury is using the week, not only to celebrate the part they play in the community, but also to launch some new and regular events at Adderbury and North Oxfordshire’s award winning pub.
The week kicks off with their regular Steak Night on Saturday 11th July, followed by a chance to win over £600 when the jackpot prize for the weekly “Open-the-Box” draw must be won. Tickets will be on sale during the evening, with a buy-one-get-one-free offer before 9.30 and the draw takes place at 10.30! 10% of the prize money is automatically donated to Katharine House Hospice.
In addition to Darts, Quiz and Aunt Sally nights there will be the first of what is planned to become a regular Bingo Night on Monday 13th July. Doors open at 6.00pm with ‘Eyes Down’ at 7.00pm!
On the evening of Tuesday 14th, customers can vote, at the Bell’s own ‘LocAle Election’, to elect their favourite local beer, whilst enjoying a choice of six cask ales all priced at £2.00! Everyone who votes will be entered into a free prize draw to win a Bell Inn Polo Shirt.
On Wednesday 15th there will be a Ladies pamper night. Sessions will include reduced priced manicure/pedicure, Indian head massage, makeup/beauty advice, eyebrow shaping, jewelry for sale, etc., etc. Entrance is free entry and sessions start at 7.30pm.
Following an invitation to come along and meet the people behind the bar and find out more about the industry, local MP Tony Baldry will be visiting the Bell On Friday 17th at 6.30pm, to see for himself the part the Adderbury pub plays in the community, both as a facility to those living in Adderbury but also it’s fundraising efforts, raising money for Katharine House Hospice. Last year the pub’s fund raising efforts for charity exceeded it’s actual net profit, an effort that was acknowledged by the Hook Norton Brewery, who Highly Commended John and Trisha at this years Hooky Gold Awards Ceremony at Heythrop Park.
Saturday 18th July sees the launch of a brand new ‘wine offer’ in the form of a new wine list, lower prices, a bigger choice of measures, a ‘wine of the month’ with a ‘buy two large glasses get the rest of the bottle free’ offer! To mark this occasion they are holding a Cheese and Wine Evening from 7.30pm until 9.00pm, in partnership with their next door neighbours, Rob and Sally, from Taste Buds (the village shop), who will be offering advice on a selection of their cheeses to match the new wines. Tickets for this event, allowing you to sample both wine and cheese, are available for just £5.00, either from Taste Buds or the Bell.
The Bell’s ‘Proud of Pubs Week’ is rounded off on Sunday 19th in the afternoon with the Bell Inn ‘Aunt Sally’ House Cup. This competition is open to anyone from the village, The Bell’s Cask Ale Drinkers Club, or those who play for any of the Bell pub teams and starts with the draw, which takes place at 2.30pm. Trisha will be barbecuing during the afternoon and there will be a presentation of trophies to the winner and runner-up, together with a trophy for the winning ‘also-ran’ (The winner of a competition for those knocked out in the first round!). Entrance fee of £2 will go to Katharine House Hospice.
The Bell Inn’s landlord, John Bellinger, said, “Proud of Pubs Week is a national and local celebration of pubs and aims to promote the positive message about the pub trade to as many people as possible. Every week more than 15 million people socialise in the nation’s pubs, more than 600,000 people rely on pubs and beer for their employment and more than 80 per cent of pubs now serve food, dishing up more than 1.1 billion meals a year! This year, however, the industry is facing an unprecedented series of challenges, many stemming from an ongoing onslaught of red tape and legislation besieging the industry and with 50 pubs a week now closing across the country it’s a time when all publicans should be saying “WE ARE PROUD OF OUR PUB, COME IN AND SEE WHY!”

ADDERBURY GOLF DAY 2009
ADDERBURY GOLF DAY 2009
BANDITS BURN UP GOLF COURSE………RECORDS SMASHED
Adderbury father and son team Simon and Joe Davies brought the usual cries of “Bandit!” when they cruised to a 49 point score to record their second win in the fifth staging of the Adderbury Golf Day at a sun-drenched Banbury Golf Club on June 12th - but this time it was the new superslim Simon Davies, fresh from his triumphant London Marathon run, who despite all the protests, actually did play the round of his life (Simon - the handicap committee meets next Tuesday)
They left in their wake a record field of 63 golfers of all shapes sizes abilities and ailments, who enjoyed the outstanding condition of the course, and Banbury Golf Club’s usual warm and welcoming hospitality
Runners-up were the ageing reigning champions Kevin Darke and Gary Fisher (more bandits) with BGC stalwart Tony Chainey taking nearest the pin, and our American visitor Casey Strine III making the longest drive
Thanks once again to the generosity of Banbury Golf Course in sponsoring the tournament, and to the many local businesses and villagers who donated such a splendid array of draw prizes, we were able to make a record £1800 for Katharine House Hospice
Will you be there next year?

Fish and Chip Quiz Night a Sell Out

Last Saturday night's Fish and Chip Quiz Night at the Lucy Plackett Activity Centre was a huge success. Once again Shaun set some challenging questions and an in-depth knowledge of the 'Simpsons' proved of help to some. Mark and Tessa's fish and chips were as delicious as ever. Would love to know how they manage to make their batter so light. Thanks to Rob and Sally for selling the tickets. A fun evening was much enjoyed by all who attended and it helped to raise funds towards the day-to-day running of the costs of the Activity Centre.

Survival guide for any Adderbury people facing redundancy
A survival guide for local people worried about losing their jobs has been put together by Cherwell Council.
Although the area has so far avoided the worst of the looming recession, prospects for 2009 are looking increasingly challenging according to Cherwell’s economic portfolio holder Cllr Norman Bolster.
“In north Oxfordshire we do have a strong and diverse economy but there is no room for complacency,” he says. “We have already been affected by national issues, such as the closure of Woolworths in Banbury and Bicester, and we can see more specific local industries, such as performance motorsport, under increasing pressure. It looks like many people will be facing critical decisions about their future and we will offer support where we can.”
The council’s latest initiative to help local people is to publish a special guide for anyone being made redundant or worried about facing redundancy in the year ahead. It includes a vital checklist for the last day at work along with advice about paying bills, getting benefits and finding a new job. There is also a section about self-employment.
Cherwell has already stepped up its housing and council tax benefits system to cope with an expected 30 per cent increase in claimants. It has also introduced more flexible billing and speeded up payments to ease cash flow problems for small local businesses.
“Over the years we have encouraged a wide variety of employers into the district and this policy is now helping with long-term stability,” comments Cllr Bolster, who is Cherwell’s portfolio holder for economic development and estates.
“Cherwell can still be a district of opportunity. In the short term however there will be worrying times ahead for some people and, where the district council is not able to take direct action, we are working closely with partner agencies to provide an economic safety net and to point people in the direction of useful help and advice,” he says.
His department publishes information for businesses, encourages investment, hosts an enterprise support service and works closely with chambers and business groups to assist businesses directly.
The new leaflet is called ‘Worried about facing redundancy?’ and can be obtained from Cherwell Council offices in Banbury, Bicester and Kidlington. The same information along with contact details can also be found on the Council website www.cherwell.gov.uk

The Bell Inn at The Publican Food & Drink Awards

John and Trisha Bellinger of the Bell Inn at Adderbury, were finalists in The Publican Food & Drink Awards, Cask Ale Pub of the Year category, but were pipped at the post by Andrew and Lynn Grant of the Hare and Hounds in Bury, Greater Manchester. The quality of the finalists was very high and it was one of the closest categories of the evening.
John and Trisha attended the gala presentation along with the other finalists from Bury, Lytham and Nottingham, with the Bell being the only pub representing the south of England. John said, “Being a finalist in the Cask Ale Pub of the Year category of this prestigious national award has been absolutely fantastic when you realise that the other finalists are all town or city centre pubs with a capability to attract a lot more cask ale drinkers. The category winners broke all records last month by being the first ever pub to offer 129 cask ales, during their beer festival, which is some achievement in it’s self! Trisha and I love what we do and it’s good to know that all of our hard work does not go un-noticed.”
When asked what was the secret to being one of the top cask ale pubs in the country, John tunefully explained, “It ain’t what you do it’s the way that you do it, that’s what gets results!”
John and Trisha intend to celebrate their successes of the past year, with customers and staff, by hosting a special party night at the Bell on Saturday 22nd November.

Vandalism in Childrens playgrounds

The Rise - It looks as though a car has been driven through the fence protecting the children's play area. The broken wood was left with nails protruding and the presentation plaque has been smashed to smithereens.
Lucy Plackett Playing Field. The waste bin, complete with concrete base, in the children's play area has been thrown under the hedge.
Do we want a child to be badly injured before something is done about this mindless vandalism?
If you have any information about either of these instances please contact the Parish Council with details and help us catch those responsible

Bloxham Grove Windmill

Bloxham Grove Windmill is a well known land mark for local walkers, joggers, horse riders and cyclists. It was built around 1865 by Lampitt & Co. of Banbury for Henry Warriner - a distinguised engineer & member of the Warriner family who owned Bloxham Grove Farm. It was built as a half-scale replica of a post mill with all working parts including mill stones etc. During that century Henry would often have the mill turning & grinding corn, particulary on high days and holidays. Since those heady days the windmill has been little used and over the years has fallen into disrepair despite some ocassional restoration work. In 2007 a voluntary group - Friends of Bloxham Grove Windmill- was established to oversee, with the Windmill/Landowners agreement-the regular upkeep and working of the mill. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings(SPAB) has provided funding and expert advice to this end, and has successfully obtained Grade 2 listing for the mill.
Having carried out much renovation work in 2007, FBGW are pleased to report that on a blustery day a the end of April this year cloth sails were attached to the mill, the sails turned and some 4 Kgs of flour produced - the first corn milling in over 100 years! Cakes, biscuits and bread were made with the flour, and were distributed to the individuals/organisations at the forefront in supporting the project.
The windmill will be open to the public this July 20th (10am -1pm) as part of the Bodicote July Weekend Festival, and there will be a photographic exhibition of the Mill at the Bodicote Kings Field the same afternoon.

Bell Inn wins Gold Award

John and Trisha Bellinger, licensees of the Bell Inn at Adderbury, were awarded top honours on Wednesday evening at the Hook Norton Brewery’s ‘Hooky Gold Awards’, held at Eynsham Hall near Witney. The couple were presented with the prestigious David Clarke Memorial Tankard and certificate for the top award of the evening, The Highest Scoring Beautiful Beer Pub.
The couple received their Beautiful Beer Gold Award last year from the British Beer & Pub Association. The award, which is a badge of beer quality, recognises pubs that serve great quality beer - both draught and bottled. Specially trained inspectors carried out a thorough audit of the pub, from the storage of beer in the cellar through to the pouring of the beer behind the bar. To pass the inspection, pubs have to score 85 out of a possible 100 points. Regular inspections are carried out throughout the year to ensure that the quality remains high!
John said, “We pride ourselves on the quality of our beer at the Bell, so it was fantastic when we received the external recognition last year. The Beautiful Beer plaque on the wall tells customers that when they order a beer at the Bell, they can be guaranteed it's a great one. The ability to give our customers a consistently high quality beer experience is central to what the Bell is all about. With the knowledge, passion and commitment to deliver this, we reap the rewards, with motivated staff and satisfied customers. “
“The Hooky Gold Award is the one that all licensees want as it shows that their beer is the best of the best and I am particularly honored to be the first to receive the David Clarke Memorial Tankard in memory of James Clarke’s father, whom I knew from the late 80’s and who introduced me to the ‘Hook Norton Family’!”
