Local businesses under threat more now than ever
There are now definite signs that the economic situation is starting to bite, affecting small local businesses which are a part of the life blood of the village. We all have an interest in trying to offset this creeping devitalisation and, maybe, we don’t think about it often enough. Sometimes the answer is simple. Use your local businesses or lose them, Using local businesses is effort effective and provides high quality goods and services. In the unlikely event that it doesn’t do the latter, you don’t have far to go to put matters right! Fears that ‘going local’ is much more expensive are often unfounded. Sometimes local businesses are no more expensive than those in towns and cities and, if they are, consider what you save in petrol, parking and time if you have to travel to them. Using our cars less is also good for the environment.
We are particularly concerned about our village shop as it is now an endangered species there being only the one. A village this size without a shop is a village with a failing heart. Sally and Rob have worked so hard to establish it and continue to work long hours taking very few holidays to keep a top quality service going. We are sure that every villager recognises the value of ‘our’ shop and would like to support it. We’d like to suggest a few ways of doing so which will save you some time and, maybe a little money too.
1. Going in to pick up your newspaper or to the hairdresser? Why not buy some basics e.g. bread, flour for your bread making, milk, meat etc?
2. We all know the meat and cheese is of high quality. Afraid it will be too dear? As well as offering cheaper cuts, delicious ready meals, pies etc., Sally and Rob will cheerfully sell you 2 sausages, paper thin slices of fillet steak to make a delicious sandwich, one chop or a tiny slice of delicious speciality cheddar!
3. Do you know anyone who is unable to get out? Why not pick up some nutritious bread, meat, cheese etc for them when you pay your visit?
4. Try and pop into ‘your ‘village’ shop at least once a week. Ordering a newspaper or magazine will give you a good reason to do so. If you do not live too near your shop, try walking if you can. You might enjoy the walk and for those of you who do not know this beautiful part of the village very well, exploring it is uplifting.
This is, in a way, an advertisement for the shop but it was not solicited by Rob or Sally. Importantly, it is yet another rallying call to the village to use it and other businesses before they run into real trouble. We responded well to such a call to protect our library, let’s make sure we stand up for local providers of goods and services in difficult times.
